Caltrain’s transition to electrified service is proving to be a game changer. The commuter rail system saw a 41% increase in ridership in December compared to the previous year, signaling a strong shift toward public transit usage.
With over 588,000 riders in December, up from 416,000 in 2023, the numbers highlight growing passenger confidence in the modernized system. Weekday ridership averaged just over 24,000 passengers, reflecting a 39% rise. Meanwhile, weekend ridership has surged, with Saturdays up by 62% and Sundays jumping 85%, reaching levels close to pre-pandemic demand.
Ridership Surge Following Electrification
According to Caltrain Executive Director Michelle Bouchard, the electrified system is delivering exactly as promised. “We are providing a fast, convenient, modern service, and many people who are tired of sitting in gridlock on 101 are getting onboard and experiencing the future of travel firsthand,” she stated.
The increase in ridership is not an isolated spike. The trend began with the first full month of electrified operations in October 2024, which saw a 54% rise in ridership compared to the same period in 2023. As passengers continue to embrace the electrified network, Caltrain is cementing itself as a viable alternative to congested highways and car dependency in the Bay Area.
