Why the Miami-Dade Transit Station Has Been Closed for Months

By | February 4, 2025

Since January 21, the Coconut Grove Metrorail Station has been closed to the public, leaving daily commuters to seek alternative routes as the Miami-Dade Transit (MDT) system undergoes a significant transformation. The closure is expected to last four months, with officials aiming to reopen the station by spring.

What’s Happening at Coconut Grove Station?

The station, positioned at the intersection of Southwest 27th Avenue and U.S. 1, is currently undergoing major renovations. According to MDT officials, the project includes:

  • New elevators and escalators for improved accessibility.
  • Modernized granite benches to enhance passenger comfort.
  • Upgraded restrooms with contemporary fixtures.
  • Enhanced wayfinding signage to simplify navigation.
  • ADA-compliant features for greater accessibility.

To accommodate impacted commuters, bus shuttles are running between Coconut Grove and Douglas Road stations, ensuring continued access to the Metrorail system.

A Step Toward a Modern Transit Hub

This renovation is part of the broader Grove Central development, a transit-oriented initiative designed to increase connectivity and urban mobility in Coconut Grove and surrounding areas. MDT emphasizes that the closure is temporary but necessary to deliver a more modern and efficient commuting experience.

Not the Only Closure in 2025

Commuters have also had to adjust to the closure of the Park West Metromover Station, located at 800 NE Second Avenue. As of Monday, this station was shut down for an anticipated six months to undergo another major renovation project.

What’s Next for Miami-Dade Transit?

The upgrades at Coconut Grove and Park West signal MDT’s commitment to modernizing Miami’s public transit infrastructure. While these closures pose challenges for daily commuters, they also promise a revitalized, accessible, and user-friendly transit system upon completion.

As Miami’s urban landscape evolves, MDT continues to invest in projects that aim to enhance mobility, improve safety, and streamline passenger experience across the region.
